Why some PDFs barely shrink

A PDF may already contain optimized images and compressed object streams. In that case, further reduction requires lowering image resolution or quality, which can produce visible changes. A text-only PDF may also be small already.

How to check the result

Do not judge only by the percentage saved. Open the output and inspect the pages that contain the smallest text, detailed charts, signatures and photographs. Compare these with the original at the zoom level your recipient is likely to use.

• Confirm every page is present.
• Check that text remains readable.
• Look for blocky gradients or blurred diagrams.
• Test search and copy if the original had selectable text.

Other ways to meet a file-size limit

If compression alone is not enough, remove pages that are not required, split the document into allowed parts, or rescan source pages at a suitable resolution. Avoid repeatedly compressing the same output because each lossy pass can reduce clarity.
